Do this in remembrance of me.
—1 Corinthians 11:24
On the night of his betrayal, Jesus hosted his final Passover meal with his disciples, at which time he inaugurated the Lord’s Supper: “Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup,” he said, “do it in remembrance of me.”
Later, in Gethsemane, he told Peter, James, and John, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow . . . Keep watch with me.” He went deeper into the garden, “fell with his face to the ground,” and prayed to his Father that he might be delivered from the approaching agony.
When he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping, he asked, “Couldn’t you keep watch with me for one hour?”
We sometimes come to this sacred supper with distracted minds. “Can’t you do this in remembrance of me,” he might ask, “thinking only of me for five minutes?”
Refuse to be distracted.
