God is my help;
the Lord is the one who sustains me.
—Psalm 54:4
Sustain: to give support or relief to; to support the weight of; to buoy up. (Merriam-Webster)
Sustain. I love that word. It describes God’s constant care.
“For forty years you sustained them [the Israelites] in the wilderness; they lacked nothing” (Neh 9:21).
“I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me” (Ps 3:5).
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you” (Ps 55:22).
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you” (Is 46:4).
A.L. Faust wrote: “Under every condition in every circumstance, for every burden, in every need, through every sorrow, God, the source and sustainer of life, is more than sufficient.”
Tired? Drained? Spent?
But never beyond God’s sustaining touch.
