I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.
—Psalm 32:5
L.A. just couldn’t do it. To save his life (soul?), he couldn’t admit a mistake, couldn’t confess that he was less than perfect.
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves,” wrote John in 1 John 1:8. Verse 9 is a WOW verse: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
You’ve heard the subterfuge:
“I may not be perfect, but I’m better than Vladimir Putin.”
“Me a sinner? Well, I may stray from the straight-and-narrow now and then, but I’m basically a good person.”
David had a better take on it: “I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.’ And you forgave the guilt of my sin” (Ps 32:5).
Confession is the key that unlocks
the door to forgiveness.
