On Being Rich

The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
                                      —1 Timothy 6:10

Those who have amassed fortunes are frequent targets of criticism by those who haven’t.

I know some wealthy people who are worthy of admiration, not censure. They possess an uncommon ability to build and accumulate. They also have an uncommon recognition that their talents are God-given and never lose sight of what is eternally important.

They take 1 Timothy 6:17–19 to heart: “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth . . . but to put their hope in God. . . . Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.”

Live in such a way that it
won’t be all over when it’s all over.
