[Be careful] how you live—
not as unwise but as wise.
—Ephesians 5:15
Augustine wrote: “Wisdom has two beautiful daughters. Their names are Anger and Courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain as they are.”
You know the first daughter, because you’re angry about the way things are: war, corruption, hypocrisy . . . the list grows long.
But what sets you apart is your commitment to the second daughter: you have the courage to make your corner of the world better. You ask yourself the hard questions and hold yourself accountable:
- Am I making the best use of my time, my life?
- Am I being a good steward of my funds?
- Am I being a faithful guardian of my influence?
“Teach us to use wisely all the time we have” (Ps 90:12 CEV).
You may not be a “person of influence.”
But, for better or worse, you exert influence.
