Why?

Should we accept only good from God
and not adversity?
     —Job 2:10

The tormenting question that assaults the mother who loses her baby, the wife who learns of her husband’s infidelity, and the father whose teenage son takes his life is, “Why?”

In a single day, Job received word that his livestock had been stolen and slaughtered, his servants murdered, and his children—all ten of them—killed in a tornado.

I’ve tried to imagine the anguish of that good man but find it beyond my comprehension.

Job had his “Why?” moments. But his backup was that God had immensely blessed him, so he said he should uncomplainingly accept adversity when it came his way.

Samuel Johnson said: “When any calamity has been suffered, the first thing to be remembered is how much has been escaped.” Not easy to do. But good advice to hold in reserve.

Balance your advantages and your adversities.
