They did not know what he was talking about.
—Luke 18:34
When Jesus said that he would suffer and die in Jerusalem, Peter responded, “Never, Lord! This shall never happen to you” (Mt 16:21–22).
Jesus repeatedly told his disciples that he would be flogged, killed, and on the third day would rise again. But they did not understand and didn’t know what he was talking about (Lk 18:31–34).
Why did Jesus’ crucifixion take his disciples by surprise? Because they were obsessed with thoughts of an earthly king and kingdom.
I am constantly amazed at the distorted conclusions of some brilliant Bible commentators. How do they miss the obvious?
The same way I do; the same way you do. We read the Bible through a preconceived lens.
Struggle against the tendency to hear only what you want to hear.
None are so blind as those who refuse to see.
