What are they among so many?
—John 6:9
“[Jesus] was moved with compassion for them” (Mt 14:14)—that is, for the hungry multitude. His disciples didn’t share his concern. They only saw a bunch of hungry people a long way from home. “Send them away,” they said to Jesus, “so they can go to town and buy food.”
Jesus said, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat” (Mt 14:16).
What!? There were more than 5,000 men here. Querying the crowd, all the food they found was a kid’s sack lunch of five loaves and two fish.
Five and two equals seven. That’s all they had at their disposal, they said. Was it? Standing before them was the solution—for anyone who could count to eight.
