By his wounds we are healed.
—Isaiah 53:5
The dream was vivid—the whip whistled through the air and split Jesus’ flesh across bloody, gaping wounds already there from previous blows.
As the soldier raised the Roman flagrum to strike again, the dreamer moved in to stop him.
When the soldier turned toward him, the dreamer was startled to see that the assailant’s face was his own.
It was our sin that caused the Savior to suffer: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed . . . the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Is 53:5, 6).
Wounded for me, wounded for me,
There on the cross He was wounded for me.
—William Ovens
We sinned. He died. We’re saved.
