When he heard this, he became very sad.—Luke 18:23
He came to Jesus with this question: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“You know the commandments,” Jesus said: “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.”
“All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.
So Jesus told him to sell his stocks and give the proceeds to the poor.
“When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.”
He had not kept the first commandment of the Decalogue: “You shall have no other gods before me” (Ex 20:3). He was an idolater, for greed is idolatry (Col 3:5).
He sadly walked away when he realized that he couldn’t serve both God and money (Mt 6:24). He chose money.
Don’t be attached to anything that causes you to
walk away from the Lord.
