An Interruption May Be an Opportunity

Come, follow me.
  —Matthew 4:19

Jesus recruited his first disciples with three words, “Come, follow me.” It was an abrupt career interruption: a call to four fishermen to abandon their boats—and to one tax collector to give up his lucrative position.

Jesus’ life was a three-year marathon of planned ministry—frequently interrupted:

“My little daughter is dying. Please come . . . So Jesus went with him” (Mk 5:23–24).

“Lord, have mercy on my son” . . . “Bring the boy here to me” (Mt 17:15, 17).

“Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” . . . “Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him” (Lk 18:38, 40).

Be ready to interrupt your own plans when you hear his voice saying, “Come, follow me.”

Your most fruitful work may
result from an interruption.
