Rise! Let us go!
—Matthew 26:46
In Gethsemane, Jesus’ three closest friends did the unthinkable—they went to sleep.
Jesus had told them he was overwhelmed with sorrow and asked them to keep watch while he went private and poured out his heart to the Father in prayer. When he returned to his friends, they were sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked (Mt 26:40). Mark tells us, “They did not know what to say to him” (Mk 14:40).
But Jesus’ final word to the snoozers was, “Rise! Let us go!” There’s a future to deal with. Let’s get on with it.
Having done something you clearly knew was wrong gives you pain. But don’t let a past failure thwart your next step. You can’t change the past, but you can move on to a different future.
Don’t give up. Move on.
