In him we have redemption through his blood.
—Ephesians 1:7
In his mid-twenties, William Cowper was so conscience-stricken that he twice attempted suicide.
“My sin! My sin!” lamented Cowper. “Oh, for some fountain open for my cleansing.”
Reading his Bible one morning, he came across this verse: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace” (Eph 1:7). William Cowper had found his long-sought fountain. He wrote:
There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.
E’er since by faith I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.
God is still creating:
making saints out of sinners.
