Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your heart.
—Hebrews 3:15
Jesus spotted Zacchaeus perched in a tree beside the road in Jericho. The little man had made the climb hoping to get a look at this teacher everyone was talking about.
Jesus said, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
Zacchaeus welcomed him, and you know the happy ending of that story: Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house” (Lk 19:9).
Suppose Zacchaeus had said, “It will be my honor to show you hospitality. But first, let me go home and prepare for your visit. Come tomorrow.”
Tomorrow Jesus would be in Jerusalem, facing the final week of his life. Never again would he be in Jericho.
“Now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6:2). There is no guarantee of a tomorrow.
Delay is deadly.
