What does the Lord require of you?
—Micah 6:8
His name was Seacat. Russell Seacat. Dr. Russell Seacat. I loved to hear him pray.
I knew how his prayer would end—for he ended every prayer the same way: “Lord God, help us to act justly and to have mercy and to walk humbly with our God.”
Israel grumbled that God was difficult to understand and hard to please. What does he want? “Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgressions?” (Mi 6:6–7).
No, answered the prophet. What God wants is quite simple: “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Mi 6:8).
What God wants is justice, mercy, and humility.
That’s it? That’s it.
