God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.
—James 4:6
C.S. Lewis said, “Pride is spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense.”
Boasting is unjustified since everything we have is a God-given gift. “What do you have that was not given to you? And if it was given to you, why do you brag as if you did not receive it as a gift?” (1 Cor 4:7).
We reactively distance ourselves from self-centered people. Those who toot their own horn eventually find themselves playing to an audience of one.
Arrogance is obnoxious—to people, also to God: “Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord” (Prv 16:5).
“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips” (Prv 27:2).
The Résumé may be the
biggest boast ever invented.
