Man looks at the outward appearance,
but the Lord looks at the heart.
—1 Samuel 16:7
All the houses looked pretty much the same—it was a cookie-cutter neighborhood. There were “For Sale” signs in several yards. But the one that caught my eye had an attachment that announced, “I’m gorgeous on the inside.”
Proverbs 31:30 says that feminine “beauty is fleeting.” And Peter talks about “the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit” (1 Pt 3:4). Don’t get me wrong—I’m not opposed to cosmetics, and I’m not picking on females.
Jesus tossed his most devastating grenade at the male religious leaders, saying they appeared beautiful on the outside but were full of hypocrisy on the inside (Mt 23:27–28).
Don’t embellish the outside and neglect the inside. We’ve all known people who were less than handsome on the outside but were gorgeous on the inside.
Outer beauty turns heads.
Inner beauty turns hearts.
