[Their] weakness was turned to strength.
—Hebrews 11:34
Jesus’ disciples were in a fierce storm. When he came toward them—walking on water—they were terrified, thinking it was a ghost. “Take courage!” Jesus said. “It is I. Don’t be afraid” (Mt 14:27).
One day he told them about many troubles that would assault them after his death. But “take courage,” he said, “I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33).
They were not naturally courageous, but they could become so—and they did.
Those heroes of the faith in Hebrews 11 had not always been strong: “[their] weakness was turned into strength” (Heb 11:34).
What does all this mean to us? It means that when our Lord bids us be what we are not, he will by his grace make us what we could never become apart from him.
Jesus will give you courage that you
could never develop on your own.
