From the Here-and-Now to the There-and-Then

The troubles we see will soon be over,
but the joys to come will last forever.
            —2 Corinthians 4:18

We’re living in the first chapter as we navigate the challenges of this life, all the while anticipating the last chapter: “the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” (Ti 2:13).

Here’s how Paul transitioned from the here-and-now to the there-and-then: “We don’t look at the troubles we can see right now; rather, we look forward to what we have not yet seen. For the troubles we see will soon be over, but the joys to come will last forever” (2 Cor 4:17–18).

Lay hold of Paul’s hope: “The prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness that the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me . . . And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his glorious return” (2 Tm 4:8).

Let your hope, not your hurt,
define your future.
