Night is coming, when no one can work.
—John 9:4
When the Israelites were rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, Nehemiah said they worked “from the first light of dawn till the stars came out” (Neh 4:21).
The period between the first light of dawn till the stars come out should be productive time. We will never grow year by year unless we’re growing day by day.
What am I when I go to bed that I was not when I got out of it? Unless I am better at sunset than I was at sunrise, I have not used the day well.
In the words of William Law: “Nourish every day with good works; give it peace in solitude; give it strength in prayer; make it wise with reading; enlighten it by meditation; make it tender with love; sweeten it with humility.”
Get a little better each day, and you will be
a lot better at the end of the year.
