You do not even know
what will happen tomorrow.
—James 4:14
Professional consultants insist that every business and organization should have a Mission Statement that clearly presents its purpose, its goals, and its step-by-step plan to achieve them.
A Life Coach does something similar, but one-on-one, tutoring an individual in identifying goals and a plan of action to reach them.
All reasonable, I suppose. But if you’re going to map your future, be sure you do it in pencil. Hindsight is 20/20. The future is tentative.
James warns against statements of certainty concerning the future, suggesting this footnote to human plans: “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” (Jas 4:15).
Of course, there are some future certainties: “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Heb 9:27).
“Be Prepared” is more than a Scout motto.
