I am gentle and humble in heart.
—Matthew 11:29
I closed yesterday’s post with a suggestion that you compose a one-sentence autobiography.
Jesus once did that. He extended this comforting invitation: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:28).
Then he described himself: “I am gentle and humble in heart.”
When we describe Jesus, we use some big words: omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent—all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present. All true—but not the words Jesus used.
He used down-to-earth words that a child can understand: gentle, humble—servant terms. As he once said, he “did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mt 20:28). Gentle. Humble.
God’s aim is to conform us to the likeness of Jesus (Rom 8:29). Gentle. Humble.
Be like Jesus. Gentle. Humble.
