The Word became flesh and
made his dwelling among us.
—John 1:14
Keith Wasserman, executive director of Good Works, Inc., has spent several days each year since 1989 living on the streets among the homeless. He does it to gain perspective and understanding of what the impoverished experience.
Isn’t that what Jesus did for us?
“He gave up his place with God and made himself nothing. He was born to be a man” (Phil 2:7). “You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich” (2 Cor 8:9).
Jesus lived on the streets, so to speak. During his ministry years, he was functionally homeless. To a would-be disciple, he said, “[I] have no home of my own, not even a place to lay my head” (Mt 8:20).
Jesus experienced the “here.”
He knows what it’s like to be you.
