The Son of Man came to
seek and to save the lost.
—Luke 19:10
On February 18, 1952, the SS Pendleton was snapped in half in a gale ten miles off the Massachusetts coast. Forty-one sailors were trapped inside the ship’s sinking stern.
When word of the disaster reached the Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Boatswain’s Mate, First Class Bernard Webber, recruited a crew of three for the almost-impossible mission of rescuing the Pendleton crew.
Thirty-two of the forty-one sailors were saved. Considered one of the most daring rescues in Coast Guard history, it was the subject of the 2016 film The Finest Hours.
Jesus’ stated mission was “to seek and save the lost.” He launched the quest from a cross on a hill outside Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. It is the greatest rescue ever and continues to this day.
Jesus came to rescue you.
He can get you safely home.
