Come to me . . . and I will give you rest.
—Matthew 11:28
I have written and posted more than 2,000 of these devotionals. I’ve rarely hit the “send” button without a feeling of apprehension because I fear my words may exacerbate rather than alleviate the pain some reader is experiencing.
Sometimes the same essay will encourage one reader and bump a sore spot of another.
I never met American journalist H.L Mencken. But he could have been talking about me when he wrote: “There’s always an easy solution to every human problem—neat, plausible, and wrong.”
It’s a lot easier to write stuff than it is to live it.
But there is a sentence that I offer to all without the slightest reservation—the words of Jesus: “Come to me, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:28).
Jesus is strong enough to carry your burdens—
and loving enough to want to.
