Those who believe in me,
even though they die, will live.
—John 11:25
In a commencement address at Stanford University, the late Steve Jobs said, “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there.”
Many people find the thought of dying terrifying: Hebrews 2:15 speaks of “those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”
Agony and anguish are the unwelcome guests at every funeral.
Grief is inevitable. But not despair. “I am the resurrection and the life,” Jesus said. “Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live” (Jn 11:25).
For the Christian, death is leaving life’s stage long enough to change into a fresh set of clothes.
Death is not the last chapter—it’s the next to last.
Death is not the final sleep,
but the final awakening.
