Weeping may remain for a night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning.
—Psalm 30:5
“It is what it is.” This cliché is another way of saying this isn’t how things should be, but it’s how things are.
We are inclined to glorify the past and harbor pessimism about the future.
But getting beyond the past to the other side of an experience is often a blessing. I’m writing these words after several days of power outage and running water disruption. It’s good to be on the other side of it—with lights illuminating and faucets flowing.
Everyone I know is glad 2020 is behind us. And everybody wants Covid-19 to be a past memory rather than a present threat.
Don’t disparage the future. Be grateful for the lengthening road behind you and the dwindling distance in front of you that leads to normalcy.
The past isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
And the future isn’t as dismal as imagined.
