Test me and know my thoughts.
—Psalm 139:23
I’m pretty sure there’s one place in your house that you don’t want anyone to see: your junk closet, where you stash stuff that’s broken, out-of-date, or just ugly. You didn’t intend for it to become your dumpster for the discarded. But there it is.
Jesus peeked in the Pharisees’ closet and scorched them: “You are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full . . . of all kinds of filth” (Mt 23:27).
Listen to David’s prayer: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Ps 139:23–24).
It took guts to pray that prayer.
Dare we pray it?
Yes, let’s.
Invite God to see you as you are
and make you what he wants you to be.
