I pray that the eyes of your
heart may be enlightened.
—Ephesians 1:18
Do you possess your possessions, or do your possessions possess you?
Paul didn’t pray for an enlargement of his readers’ financial wealth; he prayed that their spiritual vision would be sharpened. He was concerned about their spiritual growth, not their bank balance.
In Ephesians 1:18–20 he zeroed in on three things he wanted them to see with clear-eyed certainty:
1) the immeasurable hope to which they had been called;
2) the unfathomable riches of their spiritual inheritance;
3) the inexhaustible power of God available to them.
The more clearly we see these assets, the more clearly we’ll see worldly possessions for what they are: desirable, beneficial, significant—but secondary and temporary.
Don’t become so attached to what you cannot keep
that you fail to acquire what you cannot lose.
