Forget about what’s happened;
don’t keep going over old history.
—Isaiah 43:18
In a split-second, Christopher Reeve went from Superman to quadriplegic. Christopher starred as Superman in four movies. On May 27, 1995, he was thrown from his horse and left paralyzed from his neck down.
Reeve began an excruciating physical therapy regimen in 1995. In 2000, he finally moved his index finger. For the rest of his life, he was confined to a wheelchair and tethered to a breathing ventilator. He invested his restricted life in writing books and lobbying on behalf of people with spinal cord injuries.
Reeve’s dictum was: “You begin where you are, not where you wish you were.”
Today you may be in a place you don’t want to be. But here you are. You can’t start your future from where you wish you were—only from where you are.
A great test of courage is to
face disappointment without giving up.
