The people living in darkness
have seen a great light.
—Matthew 4:16
An abnormally high percentage of the 3,400 residents of Rjukan, Norway, have suffered from mental depression. They blame it on living in the dark. Surrounded by high mountains, Rjukan receives no sunlight for six months a year. It’s one of the darkest towns on earth.
That changed in 2013 when three computer-driven heliostat mirrors were installed at the top of a mountain to track the sun’s movement and reflect its rays to Rjukan’s market square, bathing it in bright sunlight.
Many of your acquaintances live in a valley of spiritual darkness, surrounded by mountains of despair. You, like John the Baptist, are a witness—a reflection—of the light that came into the world in the person of Jesus (Jn 1:5–9).
In a world of darkness, you mirror the light of life. Bless you.
There’s no darkness where you are,
for you are reflecting the light of the world.
