The apostles got into an argument about
which one of them was the greatest.
—Luke 22:24
When Jesus took off his robe, wrapped a servant towel around his waist, filled a basin, and began washing his disciples’ feet, you could have heard a pin drop.
Those disciples wouldn’t stoop to doing for each other what he was doing for them. They were jockeying to be top dog; they’d been jawing during the Passover meal about which of them was the greatest.
“If one of you wants to be great,” Jesus said, “he must be the servant of the rest . . . like the Son of Man, who did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mt 20:26, 28).
Your education, position, heritage, affluence, or talent may put you on a pedestal, appearing to be great, worthy of being served. But you will achieve true greatness only by serving.
Be big enough to be
small enough to serve.
