I trust in your unfailing love.
—Psalm 13:5
During the Congolese civil war in 1964, British medical missionary Helen Roseveare was taken prisoner by rebel forces, and for five months repeatedly beaten and raped.
Asked how she could continue her missionary work in the Congo after such brutality (get ready, this may jar you), Helen said she imagined this question coming directly from the Lord: “Can you thank Me for trusting you with this experience even if I never tell you why?”
That’s worth a Post-it note on your mirror.
You have your own painful, unfair, why-me experiences to deal with. God has trusted you with a spirit-crushing ordeal—and on this side of the river, he may never tell you why. Can you still trust him?
That takes faith to a whole new level.
When you can thank God no matter what,
you’ve reached a spiritual status few achieve.
