A happy heart makes the face cheerful.
—Proverbs 15:13
“Dandy” Don Meredith was quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys for nine seasons (1960–1968). Asked why he retired from football, he said it was because he stopped having fun. He got so uptight he couldn’t enjoy the game and couldn’t laugh.
So he shucked the pads and picked up the microphone, becoming an analyst for NFL Monday Night Football. And when that stopped being fun, he became an actor. Good for “Dandy” Don.
Responsibility and self-discipline come with growing up. But no one is less efficient and more incompetent than the negative person wearing a perpetual frown. That person isn’t much use to society, church, or family.
If you’ve stopped having fun, you’re no fun being around—and on a scale of 1-to-10, your witness probably clocks in at, oh, about minus 5.
Don’t paint your life gloomy.
It’s an ugly color.
