He has given each one
of us a special gift.
—Ephesians 4:7
Thomas J. DeLong, a professor at Harvard Business School, notes a disturbing trend he sees in people in all walks of life. He calls it “comparison obsession”—being consumed with comparing our accomplishments with the achievements of others.
The Bible warns that comparisons pose a double danger: either causing us to elevate self and look down on others—“God, I thank you that I am not like other people” (Lk 18:11); or causing us to elevate others and look down on self—“You . . . are jealous of other people” (Jas 4:2).
Veto “comparison obsession” by focusing on what you have: 1) A special gift that no one else has; 2) a personality that no one else has; 3) an area of influence that no one else has.
Celebrate your uniqueness.
God made only one you.
There isn’t another like you.
