In those days … everyone did as he saw fit.
—Judges 17:6
Micah was less than a son should be and his mother less than a mother should be. She hired a silversmith to cast an idol for him. Such was the culture of the times, for “In those days … everyone did as he saw fit.”
That’s pretty much the way things were when Paul wrote Romans: people refused to acknowledge God and did as they saw fit. So God let them go their own degraded ways. He gave them up “to sexual impurity,” “to shameful lusts” and “to a depraved mind” (Romans 1:24, 26, 28).
It mirrors the moral climate of our time, when many do as they see fit. Eventually God says, “OK, have it your way.”
They may enjoy the trip,
but they won’t like the destination.
