Trust in God; trust also in me.
—John 14:1
I have no helpful—or satisfactory—answers to the “Why?” questions.
Why were twenty first-graders killed in a senseless shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut?
Why did Ellicott City, Maryland, get hammered by a town-destroying flood, while still in the throes of recovery from a deluge that engulfed them two years earlier?
Why were three teenage girls in Houston, Texas, killed by a drunk driver who ran a red light and T-boned their Ford Excursion?
Why cancer? Why addiction? Why divorce? Why pain?
Questions for which my only answer is four words: “I do not know.”
But I have a one-word answer to one question: “Does God care?” The one-word answer is Jesus. The sacrificial death of God’s Son, which will ultimately eliminate all suffering and sorrow, and destroy death forever, answers that question.
