The Lord will reign for ever and ever.
—Exodus 15:18
The wind started blowing, the sea started parting, and two million Israelites trotted across the sea bed on dry ground. Now God had their attention! “When the Israelites saw the great power the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people … put their trust in him” (Exodus 14:31).
They even composed a celebratory song. The first verse went this way: “I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously.” And the last verse ran: “The Lord will reign for ever and ever” (Exodus 15:1, 18).
Know how long that “for ever and ever” lasted? Three days. That’s how long it took for them to start fussing that the water was bitter and the food disgusting. Good job, God, but what have you done for me lately?
If God doesn’t measure up to your
expectations you need a new yardstick.
