He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
—Luke 14:35
Scripture puts a priority on hearing.
The “Shema”— the centerpiece of Jewish prayers—began: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord” (Dt 6:4).
“Let anyone with ears to hear listen!” Jesus said (Mk 4:23). “Anyone who listens to my teaching and obeys me is wise . . . But anyone who hears my teaching and ignores it is foolish” (Mt 7:24, 26 NLT).
Each of the letters to the seven churches in Revelation ends with the words, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says . . .”
Then Jesus extends this invitation: “I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in” (Rv 3:20).
Hear, O Israel!
Hear, O Church!
Hear, O Christian!
Don’t let the noise of life
drown out the voice of God.
