Sing and make music in
your heart to the Lord.
—Ephesians 5:19
Many hymns are miniature Bible studies, distillations of Bible truths that summarize our faith and verbalize our worship.
At a revival in 1850, Fanny Crosby experienced an awakening—not from the sermon, but from the last verse of Isaac Watts’ hymn, Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed? . . .
But drops of grief can ne’er repay
The debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away;
’Tis all that I can do.
Fanny Crosby eventually wrote more than 8,500 hymns, including Safe in the Arms of Jesus; All the Way My Savior Leads Me; Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior; Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross.
Today be blessed by meditating on the words of one of those hymns.
There’s a lot of solid theology
in your hymnal.
