What do I still lack?
—Matthew 19:20
He was rich, but unfulfilled. So he came to Jesus with a question: “What must I do to get eternal life?”
Obey the commandments.
Done that. What else must I do?
Sell your possessions and give to the poor.
That hill was too steep to climb, for he was possessed by his possessions.
In David Lodge’s novel, Therapy, the doctor tells the main character to make a list of the good things in his life in one column and the bad things in another.
In the first column he wrote:
Professionally successful
Well off
Good health
Stable marriage
Kids successfully launched in adult life
Nice house
Great car
As many holidays as I want
In the second column:
Feel unhappy most of the time
What would your list look like?
Those who have it all
usually don’t have it all.
