The evil I do not want to do—
this I keep on doing.
—Romans 7:19
Some things are so routine we shuffle through them without giving it a thought.
Others are so jarring they make our teeth rattle. That’s when we know we’re at war.
Sometimes relationships hit the skids, and we go for the throat.
But our most brutal war is with ourselves: “What I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing” (Rom 7:19). And we scribble in the margin, “That’s me.”
But keep reading; before you get to the end of the chapter you’ll find this: “Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 7:24–25 NLT).
The war is real, the stakes are high,
and victory is within reach.
