Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
—Matthew 5:4
The mourner here is not one who grieves over earthly loss, but one who mourns over their sin; their loss of innocence, righteousness, and self-respect.
Our sins bring sorrow—causing grief to us, to those we love, to God . . . and they impaled Jesus on the Cross.
“Godly sorrow brings repentance” (2 Cor 7:10). Blessed are those who mourn their sinfulness for they will be comforted …
Comforted by knowing that God “will not reject a heart that is broken and sorry for sin” (Ps 51:17 NCV).
Comforted by the assurance that when they repent and turn to God their sins are wiped out and times of refreshing come (Acts 3:19).
Jesus is the comforter sent “to bind up the brokenhearted” (Is 61:1).
Make much of grace, but never make light of sin.
