Just as he who called you is holy,
so be holy in all you do.
—1 Peter 1:15
What are you going to be when you grow up?
Not what are you going to do; not what profession are you going to follow; not what role are you going to fill?
But what are you going to be?
If God gets his way, the answer is holy . . .
Rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander . . . grow up . . . you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God . . . (1 Pt 2:1, 2, 9).
Those words fly in the face of human achievement, where we are measured by what we accomplish.
By God’s measure we grow up when we achieve holiness.
Not everyone who has succeeded is holy,
but everyone who is holy has succeeded.
