Let us then approach the
throne of grace with confidence.
—Hebrews 4:16
The writer of Hebrews holds Jesus up and asks us to have a good look: “Fix your thoughts on Jesus” (Heb 3:1); “Keep your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 12:2, TLB).
Jesus is not out to get us, he’s out to help us.
When we are nose-to-nose with temptation he comes to help us defeat it (Heb 2:18).He sympathizes with our weaknesses and understands everything we face, “for he faced all of the same temptations we do” (Heb 4:15 NLT).
“Let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Heb 4:16). Look at the gifts of this verse—mercy and grace. Mercy to cover yesterday’s sins; grace to cover today’s needs.
Mercy delivers us from what we deserve.
Grace grants us what we don’t deserve.
