Be careful that you do not
forget the Lord your God.
—Deuteronomy 8:11
When Moses delivered his valedictory to Israel he charged them to remember how God had blessed them; then gave them fair warning that when they became prosperous, built ritzy houses, and wined and dined in luxury, they would be in danger of forgetting what the Lord had done for them (Dt. 8:10–14). And sure enough, that’s what happened.
Prosperity is a blessing; also a danger. It can—and should—produce humility; it can—and often does—produce pride. “You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth” (Dt. 8:17, 18).
Don’t forget what is best remembered—
or remember what is best forgotten.
