So that you may know
that you have eternal life.
—1 John 5:13
General Motors worked for years to build a Safecar that would insure occupant-safety in a 100 mph crash.
They never got there. In a final report, GM engineer William Larson said if the car crashed into a solid barrier at 50 mph all occupants would be killed—“although some only slightly.”
GM wasn’t swamped with orders from customers who wanted to be killed only slightly.
Do you have nail-biting jitters, convinced that if you get into heaven, it will be barely?
Because of Jesus you can “approach the throne of grace with confidence” (Heb. 4:16), for he “is able to save completely those who come to God through him” (Heb. 7:25).
John slams the door on skin-of-the-teeth salvation—“[Y]ou may know that you have eternal life” (1 Jn. 5:13).
Certainty of salvation is not pie in the sky—
it’s trust in God’s promise.
