James, a servant of God
and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
—James 1:1
James, a servant of God. If James had his preference those are the words that would have been chiseled on his gravestone. At least that’s how he opened his New Testament letter.
Paul, Peter, and Jude opened letters with similar words.
Moses had a rod. David had a slingshot. Dorcas had a needle. Paul had a pen. Each had a different gift. And each made a big difference—as servants of God they ministered to their time, place, and people with their God-given gift.
Your gift is uniquely yours—given to you, and only to you. What God wants to do through you will be done by you or not done at all.
What can you do? That’s what he asks of you. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Do what you can, where you are,
with what you have.
