Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary

[He] bore our sins in his body on the cross.
                             —1 Peter 2:24

In Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress dream, he saw Christian at the slough of Despond: “Because of the burden on his back, Christian began to sink.”

Later: “At the top of the hill stood a cross, and a little below at the bottom was a stone tomb. In my dream, just as Christian came up to the cross his burden loosened from his shoulder and fell off his back. It tumbled and continued to do so down the hill until it came to the mouth of the tomb where it fell inside and was seen no more.”

In the words of John Moore’s hymn:

Cast your care on Jesus today,
Leave your worry and fear;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near.

Calvary, Calvary;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary.
