Boasting

Let those who boast boast in this,
that they understand and know me.
                —Jeremiah 9:24

“It’s not whether you win or lose but how you play the game,” goes the saying. Really? I’ve never seen a losing team stay on the field screaming, “We’re number three! We’re number three!”

I like to see my hometown Astros, Texans, and Rockets win. But I doubt that anyone will know or care a century from now.

Don’t overrate things that don’t last. “Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom, do not let the mighty boast in their might, do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth” (Jer 9:23). Three things are named here that generate a lot of boasting but have short lifespans.

If you’re going to boast, get it right: “Let those who boast boast in this, that they understand and know me, that I am the Lord.” (Jer 9:24).

Overvaluing the transitory
is a disastrous disease.
